How it works

What you hand over

A report as PDF, Word (DOCX), plain text or Markdown, uploaded from your device, chosen from your Google Drive, or pasted as text. Nothing is checked until you press start. The check runs on our servers in the EU, and the result stays in your organization’s Reports.

Reading the document

The document is read page by page: the running text, the tables, and the values in the charts. Every sentence is then split into its individual factual claims. A sentence that carries three figures becomes three claims, and each is checked on its own.

Finding the evidence

For each claim the Fact Checker looks in two places. First, the source the report itself cites: a footnote, a link, a named publication. Second, the open web, through searches built from the claim. It reads the pages it finds and keeps a record of every source it opened and every search it ran.

A report never confirms itself. A copy of the same report on another site, or a news piece repeating its numbers, does not count as evidence for it.

Reaching a verdict

Each claim gets one verdict, with the passage of the source that decides it quoted beside it. Where a figure is computed from other figures, the arithmetic is redone in code rather than taken on trust. Where the document contradicts itself, that is a finding too, with both places named.

Some claims cannot be decided: the evidence sits behind a paywall, or nobody publishes the figure. The Fact Checker says so instead of guessing.

What comes back

A review desk with every finding: what the report claimed, what the source actually says, a suggested correction, and one click to the exact line in the original. The verification trail underneath is open to inspection. You can ask follow-up questions about any claim, export an annotated copy of the report with the findings in its margins, and download a findings report.

What stays with you

The Fact Checker proposes; it never changes your document. Which corrections to take, which findings to challenge, and who signs off remain your decisions.

Spot check

When a full check is more than the moment needs, a spot check picks the ten claims that would do the most damage if they were wrong and checks those fully. Every other claim is marked as not checked, so nobody mistakes silence for approval.
